Record-Shattering Rolex: Ultra-Rare Split-Seconds Fetches $3.5 Million at Auction

30/04/2024

An ultra-rare 1942 Rolex Split-Seconds (Ref. 4113) shattered a record at Monaco Legend Group’s auction, commanding an astounding €3.3 million ($3.5 million) and setting a new benchmark for the model. With only 12 of these timepieces produced in the early 1940s, they were originally designed for aviation pilots but found their way into the Italian automotive world, where they were privileged gifts exclusively bestowed upon members of certain racing teams.

Believed to be one of just nine surviving examples, this particular Split-Seconds is a testament to the exceptional craftsmanship of Rolex. Its oversized 44mm steel case, one of the largest in the brand's collection, houses a caliber 55 VBR chronograph movement with a rare split-seconds complication, capable of measuring different time intervals. Additionally, it features a telemeter scale, further enhancing its functionality.

The staggering price achieved by the Ref. 4113 reflects its rarity and historical significance, as it is believed to be the only split-second chronograph ever officially released by the esteemed Swiss watchmaker. This remarkable auction result solidifies the Split-Seconds' reputation as one of the most coveted and valuable Rolexes in existence.
