Great watch, even better jewellery - The Bulgari Serpenti is a woman’s dream

06/02/2024

Time and time again, Bulgari has proven that they are more than a jewelry maker. In fact, some of their watches can very well compete with the household big names like Rolex or Patek - both on the technical level with masterpieces like the Octo Finissimo, but even more on the aesthetic level. This is especially true in the women’s category.

The great Swiss watchmakers are more than capable of making beautiful timepieces, apart from small hiccups (look up the Aquanaut Luce introduced last year), but it’s more of a step out of their comfort zone. A great and intricate movement with 2 tourbillons and a minute repeater? No problem at all. A well-designed and original timepiece for women that is not just a smaller version of the original model with some added diamonds? Yeah, not so easy.

But for brands like Bulgari, this is their bread and butter. They became famous for their unconventional designs, then more than successfully pivoted to the world of luxury watches, mainly the women’s category. And what more iconic women’s Bulgari watch there is than the one and only Serpenti?

Contrary to popular belief, the Serpenti collection is way older than most of the big Swiss models we know today, dating its first exemplars back to 1948. Back then, it featured a yellow-gold body with the now iconic triangular serpent’s head and tail set with diamonds. As the years went by, the collection changed and evolved into some of the finest women’s watches you can buy.

The Serpenti is instantly recognizable thanks to two aspects: the aforementioned serpent-like case, but mainly the unique and unmistakable tubogas bracelet. What is a tubogas? Since the 1950s, this breathtaking design basically mimics the body of a serpent wrapped around your wrist, giving the Serpenti line its one-of-a-kind appeal.

In practice, the result is a shorter or longer bracelet that is very flexible and allows comfortable wear – which is not always the thing with fine jewelry or watches – while remaining firmly on your arm.

Based on the looks, you can easily understand why many women, who otherwise hardly know what a Rolex is, will happily spend tens of thousands on a watch from Bulgari. There is something sensual about the multiple layers of metal in the shape of a snake being so closely wrapped around your wrist.

Bulgari knows it and builds upon it, and for that, they have our full respect.
