The first incident happened at the Flying Fish Arctos, a McIntyre 55, sailing approximately 30 nautical miles east of Ulladulla. Even though the crew tried to perform CPR, the sailor could not be revived. The second tragedy was aboard the Bowline, a Beneteau First 44.7, 30 miles northeast of Batemans Bay, with similar results.

The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia (CYCA) expressed condolences, saying: “Our thoughts are with the crews, family, and friends of the deceased.” Authorities are investigating both fatalities and details remain limited until families are notified.
The first day of the 628-mile race brought more challenges. A man overboard incident aboard the Tasmanian yacht Porco Rosso saw a sailor separated from the vessel in pitch-black conditions. Thanks to swift action and safety protocols, including a personal locator beacon, the crew successfully retrieved him after he drifted over a mile from the boat.

The horrible conditions also forced 16 yachts to retire, including top contenders like Master Lock Comanche and Wild Oats, due to damage.
Despite these problems, the fleet continues its journey to Hobart, led by LawConnect and Celestial.
