Early Steps in the World of Watches

Richard Mille's journey into the world of horology began during the mid-seventies, as he cut his teeth at small-scale companies like Finhor and Matra. His experience and skills led him to become part of the jeweler Mauboussin, where he helped establish the brand's watch business. Despite holding prestigious roles, Mille's hunger for innovation pushed him to create his path. In 1999, he joined forces with Swiss manufacturer Audemars Piguet to establish Richard Mille SA, a brand that would challenge conventions and redefine luxury watches.

The Birth of a Legend: RM 001

Although it took two years for the brand to show the world its first watch, the RM 001, the anticipation was worth it. Created in collaboration with Renaud et Papi, the research-and-development arm of Audemars Piguet, the RM 001 was designed to break the norms of high-end watches. This tourbillon timepiece not only featured a unique levered bridge made of carbon nanofiber, a cutting-edge feature at the time, but also carried a price tag of around $135,000 – twice that of its closest competitors.

With only 17 units produced, the RM 001 set a new standard of exclusivity. The press hailed it as the "dawn of a new era in watchmaking," marking the beginning of Richard Mille's legacy in challenging boundaries.

A Legacy of Innovation

Over the years, Richard Mille's collections have continued to impress, blending remarkable aesthetics with perfectionist technical aspects. Models like the RM 003, with its dual time zone function, the gear-filled RM 004, featuring a split-second chronograph, and the RM 022, incorporating NASA-inspired materials, showcased the brand's commitment to both form and function.

However, Richard Mille watches are more than just timekeepers; they're symbols of exclusivity and luxury. The brand has earned the moniker "the secret billionaire's handshake." The RM 56-02 Sapphire Tourbillon, priced at $2.2 million, exemplifies this exclusivity. Mille's timepieces aren't ordinary watches – they're hypercars for the wrist.

The Racing Spirit

Mille's connection to the world of racing isn't coincidental. The lightweight and shock-resistant materials used in his watches, such as aluminum-lithium and orthorhombic titanium aluminide, draw parallels with those found in racing cars. F1 driver Felipe Massa, a known enthusiast of RM watches, even wore one during a crash at the 2004 Hungarian Grand Prix, and both he and the watch emerged safely.

The brand's collaborations with racing legends like Massa and other personas like Rafael Nadal, Natalie Portman, and Michelle Yeoh have further solidified its influence and recognition.

Present and Future

In 2023, Richard Mille remains a pioneer in watchmaking. His collaboration with McLaren resulted in the RM 50-03, the world's lightest split-second tourbillon chronograph. With a Graph TPT construction, this 38-gram masterpiece embodies the brand's philosophy of exclusivity, innovation, and opulence.

As we continue to witness Richard Mille's journey, it's evident that his brand is more than a collection of watches; it's a symbol of the New in the realm of haute horlogerie, challenging norms, and embodying everything we love about the industry. Nowadays, watchmakers tend to stick to the safe and known traditions -  Richard Mille stands as a beacon of the future, reminding us that timekeeping is an art form that continues to evolve. With each new creation, we impatiently anticipate the next chapter in this legendary story of horological excellence.
