A Classy Gangster: Al Capone and His Rolex

10/07/2024

Prohibition, racketeering, and sharp-dressed gangsters — the 1920s and 30s were an era of indulgence, and at the center of it all was the notorious Al Capone. Known as "Scarface," this flamboyant mobster ruled the Chicago underworld with an undeniable personal style. Born to Italian immigrants in New York in 1899, Capone's journey from Brooklyn streets to criminal empire is a tale of audacity and ambition.

Capone's early years were marked by expulsion from school and association with gangs. It was during this time that he mastered the skills that would pave the way for his notorious career. Guided by his mentor, Frankie Yale, Capone learned the value of kindness and patience, reserving violence for the direst of circumstances. However, his nickname "Scarface" was earned in an altercation over Yale's sister, leaving Capone marked for life.

Chicago beckoned in 1919 after a violent encounter that sent a rival gangster to the hospital. Alongside Johnny Torrio, Capone shaped the infamous Cosa Nostra Chicago Outfit, eventually becoming its leader. From protection rackets to bootlegging and illicit alcohol sales during Prohibition, Capone's empire expanded.

Yet, as the saying goes, "after the rise comes the fall." In 1931, Capone faced convictions for tax evasion and money laundering, leading to an 11-year prison sentence. Released on parole in 1939, he retreated from the public eye, passing away at 48 after a stroke.

Beyond his criminal exploits, Capone left an indelible mark on pop culture, giving rise to the mafia film genre. He was celebrated posthumously as a hero, a stark contrast to his notoriety during his lifetime. Capone was also a connoisseur of fashion and luxury, known for his impeccable style.

In the realm of luxury, one name stood out for Capone — Rolex. The gold Rolex Prince was always on his wrist, a symbol of both status and style. During an era when wristwatches were still finding their place, Capone's choice of the Prince was a statement of class.

The Rolex Prince, introduced in the late 1920s, featured a distinctive Art Deco-style case that turned heads. Its unique dual-dial design and chronometer-certified movement set it apart. The yellow gold ref. 3140 that Capone likely wore may seem modest by today's standards, but in its time, it held the same prestige as today's top-tier luxury timepieces.

Capone's influence extends beyond his criminal legacy; it's embedded in the fabric of an era. The gangster's larger-than-life persona and impeccable style continue to captivate imaginations. His Rolex Prince remains a testament to a man who lived life on his terms, leaving a legacy that remains to this day. So, the next time you see a Rolex Prince, remember, it once graced the wrist of the legendary Al Capone, a man whose story is etched into the minds of millions.
