Tourist in Milan stops a €400,000 watch theft with quick reflexes
A tourist in Milan almost lost their €400,000 luxury watch in an attempted robbery on Friday. The suspect, a 27-year-old man, tried to rip the watch off the tourist’s arm but was stopped thanks to the tourist’s quick reaction. Authorities quickly arrested the thief, who is suspected of being part of a gang targeting wealthy visitors in the area.

This attempt shows a growing problem in Milan. Rich tourists and luxury shoppers are targets for organized theft more and more often, which is quite unfortunate for such a beautiful city. The Quadrilatero della Moda district where the theft (almost) happened, known for its luxury boutiques, has seen a concerning growth in incidents involving watches, jewellery, and designer items. Victims are often followed from stores, hotels, or restaurants by criminals who act when least expected.

Local police are increasing patrols in response, but it’s obvious that staying safe comes down to being attentive and expecting the worst. Simple tips like keeping expensive items out of sight, using secure transport, and storing valuables in hotel safes can go a long way.

While Milan’s reputation as a luxury metropole makes it a magnet for both wealthy visitors and opportunistic thieves, it’s a challenge shared by other Italian cities like Rome and Naples.
