President Nasser’s Day-Date to be auctioned

04/12/2024

Sotheby’s is bringing a rather unique piece of history to the auction block: a 1963 Rolex Day-Date once owned by Egypt’s famous leader, Gamal Abdel Nasser. Estimated at £24,000–48,000, this special timepiece goes under the hammer on December 6 in New York, making its first public appearance.

Gifted by Anwar El Sadat, who succeeded Nasser as Egypt’s president, the watch has an Arabic engraving that symbolizes their bond. Made in 18-carat gold, with a beautiful champagne dial, and an Arabic version of the classical day and date windows.

This Rolex is not the typical gift that has spent most of its time in a box - Nasser actually wore it. This watch accompanied him through critical moments, from diplomatic talks to the turbulent Six-Day War.

After Nasser died in 1970, the watch stayed within the family, passed down through generations. Unlike most of his personal belongings, donated to a Cairo museum, this Rolex remains privately owned.
